He conjectured that every scale-invariant group has polynomial growth, hence is virtually nilpotent.   We disprove his conjecture by showing that the following groups (mostly finite-state self-similar groups) are scale-invariant: the lamplighter groups \\(F\\wr\\mathbb Z\\), where \\(F\\) is any finite Abelian group; the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups \\(\\text{BS}(1,m)\\); the affine groups \\(A\\ltimes\\mathbb Z^d\\), for any \\(A\\leq\\text{GL}(\\mathbb Z,d)\\). However, the conjecture remains open with some natural stronger notions of scale-invariance for groups and transitive graphs. We construct scale-invariant tilings of certain Cayley graphs of the discrete Heisenberg group, whose existence is not immediate just from the scale-invariance of the group. We also note that torsion-free non-elementary hyperbolic groups are not scale-invariant.","citation":[{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q2462018"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q1878979"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q2563949"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q986616"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q803678"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q4427631"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q4668873"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q5488870"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q3843662"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q1362800"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q4437747"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q4946127"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q1380243"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q1858640"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q5434679"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q4354232"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q3396184"},{"@id":"https://portal.mardi4nfdi.de/entity/Q1769504"}]},"provenance":{"prov:generatedAtTime":"2026-03-26T15:54:31Z","prov:wasAttributedTo":"MaRDI Knowledge Graph"}}
